The potential for the dietary supplements and functional foods market is considerable. It is generally acknowledged that consumers have accepted the ability of supplements to offer protection from a variety of illnesses, from the common cold to cancer, and are willing to embrace the concept of functional foods under the same premise. Although there are clinically demonstrated uses for many dietary supplements, little overwhelming evidence from human studies exists to support the widespread use of antioxidants as functional food components. This review briefly examines the relevant literature relating to antioxidants, and suggests new routes for provision of specific nutritional advice to consumers, namely nutrigenomics.
